We have been learning about mermaids in different cultures throughout history. We learnt reporting news techniques and wrote individual articles on imaginary mermaid sightings. We also created a collective mermaid art piece and named her Selkie.
We closed the mermaid topic with a sprinkle of magic from a real mermaid, Mischief from Cornwall. She’s an SSSi instructor and can hold her breath for up to 5 mins under water! Her diving skills are extraordinary and her silicone tail weighs 16 kg! Mischief shared with us stories from her trips and performances. She got nipped by feisty wee crabs and followed by curious seals. Mischief and many other mermaids are active ocean advocates. They raise awareness on important topics such as the damages caused by trawling and dangers of poor regulations of sewage disposal in the ocean. We shared with her our beach cleans and other Ocean School activities and she was impressed and encouraged us to keep it up. Thank you Mischief!
